Spelling

At the Whiteoak Academies, we follow the Unlocking Spelling Programme. This teaches spelling patterns and rules and provides frequent practice. The taught patterns are retrieved, put into context and applied in writing opportunities across all lessons. Children are not required to learn lists of spellings at home.

The spelling programme follows the National Curriculum and begins in the Spring Term of Year 2 after the phonics programme has been completed. The lessons follow the same, recognisable structure.  Each week, the children have three 15-minute taught sessions that are followed by two five-minute tasks for the children to complete independently.
