The Whiteoak Curriculum

“Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.”

William Butler Yeats

Our Vision for the Whiteoak Curriculum

At the Whiteoak Academies, our curriculum is at the heart of who we are and everything we do. Guided and shaped by our vision, values and motto, Planting Dreams. Nurturing Hearts. Growing Minds., we strive to design and build a curriculum that gives our children a deep and connected understanding of who they are, where they have come from and what they might become. Through our Whiteoak Way, children develop strong roots through a secure grasp of the foundational knowledge, skills and vocabulary needed for future success, whilst engaging deeply with important concepts across the curriculum.

As a school family, we recognise that improving educational outcomes is one of the most powerful ways we can positively impact our children’s futures. However, we believe strongly that education is much more than a set of results. It includes children’s intellectual growth, social and emotional development, citizenship and responsibility, communication and language, happiness and success. We are committed to ensuring that our curriculum is ambitious for all children, including disadvantaged pupils and those with SEND, enabling every child to thrive and achieve highly.

We strive for our vision to be lived through the way teachers deliver the curriculum and the way children experience it. We want a curriculum that is carefully designed, coherently sequenced and effectively implemented; one that is true to the distinctive nature of each subject and develops children’s substantive and disciplinary knowledge over time. Through rich experiences, ambitious vocabulary, high-quality texts and meaningful dialogue, children learn to think, question and work as historians, scientists, artists, geographers, mathematicians and readers. Knowledge is deliberately revisited across subjects and year groups so that learning is retained in long-term memory and applied with increasing confidence and sophistication. Alongside academic success, we aim to develop articulate, knowledgeable and curious learners who become informed, compassionate and courageous citizens, equipped to contribute positively to the world around them.

From little acorns, mighty oaks do grow.
