'From little acorns, mighty oaks do grow.'

At The Whiteoak Academies, we are committed to providing the very best start to our children’s educational journeys. Our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum and environment are carefully designed to nurture and inspire children so that they feel safe, secure and happy.

We place great importance on continuity between pre-school and Reception, ensuring children build on the knowledge and skills they have already developed.

Our curriculum is delivered through a practical, hands-on approach that embraces and extends children’s interests. We use a balance of deliberate teaching (guided group work) and high-quality continuous provision. Through guided learning, deliberate practice and purposeful play, children develop a deep understanding of key concepts. We place a strong emphasis on the explicit teaching of vocabulary, ensuring children develop the language they need to think, communicate and succeed across the curriculum.

We prepare children not only for success in Reception, but for a smooth and successful transition into Year One.

Our Approach

A balance of adult-led guided group work, deliberate practice and play within enhanced provision — always hands-on, always purposeful.

Our Promise

A safe, secure and happy environment where every child is supported to thrive, reach their full potential and develop a lifelong love of learning.

Aims and Vision

At The Whiteoak Academies, we are committed to continually improving our practice to provide an outstanding start for all children.

In the Early Years, we aim to:

  • Ensure all children feel happy, secure and safe
  • Foster independent, curious, creative and resilient learners
  • Create an inclusive learning environment
  • Provide a stimulating environment that builds on children’s interests
  • Ensure all children feel valued and develop a strong sense of belonging
  • Work closely with parents and carers to ensure every child feels supported, valued and ready to thrive
  • Inspire curiosity about the world
  • Deliver a challenging, engaging and carefully planned EYFS curriculum

Our Vision

  • All children access high-quality learning that is consistent across both classrooms
  • All children enter Key Stage One as resilient and independent learners
  • All parents and carers feel valued and supported in their child’s learning journey

Characteristics of Effective Learning

We support children to develop the Characteristics of Effective Learning by encouraging them to:

• Play and explore – investigating and experiencing new things
• Keep trying – developing resilience and enjoying challenges
• Think carefully – solving problems and making connections

These learning behaviours underpin everything we do and support children to become confident, independent and motivated learners.

British Values and SMSC in the Early Years

To prepare children for life in modern Britain, The Whiteoak Academies actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, mutual respect and tolerance of different faiths and beliefs.

Spiritual, moral, social and cultural (SMSC) development is embedded throughout our curriculum, environment and daily interactions. Our aim is to ensure children develop the attitudes, understanding and behaviours needed to become confident, respectful and active members of society.

Our Values

From the moment children join The Whiteoak Academies, they begin to develop a strong sense of shared values:

Kindness
Friendship
Resilience
Courage
Belonging

Children are part of a school house and are recognised for positive behaviour through house points and whole-school celebrations. Children are also recognised in celebration assemblies through values certificates, and each week two children are selected for ‘Hot Chocolate Friday’ in recognition of their positive behaviour, achievements and demonstration of our school values.

This consistent approach supports children to understand expectations, take pride in their achievements and feel a strong sense of belonging.

Spiritual Development

We provide rich opportunities for children to experience awe and wonder, particularly through engagement with the natural world. Regular outdoor learning and welly walks encourage curiosity, observation and reflection.

Daily mindfulness sessions support children to develop focus, self-regulation and emotional awareness. Creative experiences, including storytelling, music, dance and role play, enable children to express themselves confidently.

As a result, children show curiosity about the world, develop increasing levels of concentration and grow in confidence when expressing their thoughts and feelings.

Moral Development

Children are supported to understand right and wrong through clear expectations, consistent routines and meaningful discussion.

They help to create class rules, developing an understanding of the rule of law. High-quality texts and structured activities allow children to explore fairness, responsibility and moral decision-making.

As a result, children develop a strong sense of fairness, take responsibility for their actions and understand the impact of their behaviour on others.

Social Development

We prioritise the development of positive relationships and social skills. Children learn to cooperate, take turns and work collaboratively through play and adult-led activities.

Democracy is promoted by giving children a voice. They are encouraged to share their views, listen to others and take part in decision-making.

As a result, children build strong relationships, communicate effectively and show respect for others’ opinions.

Cultural Development

Our inclusive environment reflects and celebrates the diversity of the wider world. The curriculum is enriched with high-quality texts and experiences that represent a range of cultures, backgrounds and family structures.

Children are encouraged to share their own experiences and learn about others, developing an understanding of similarities and differences. Mutual respect and tolerance are actively promoted, and stereotypes are challenged in an age-appropriate way.

As a result, children develop respect for others, understand diversity and are well prepared for life in a multicultural society.

Overall Impact

Through our carefully planned curriculum and nurturing environment, children leave The Early Years at The Whiteoak Academies as confident, independent and respectful learners. They are exceptionally well-prepared for the next stage of their education, with secure knowledge, strong learning behaviours and the confidence to succeed.

"Effective early years settings are always ambitious to become better."
