Maths Mastery
Our maths lessons are carefully designed to secure a deep and lasting understanding of mathematical concepts for every pupil. Learning is introduced through small, progressive steps, with an emphasis on developing strong number fluency and conceptual understanding before moving on to more advanced content.
From Year 1 to Year 6, our maths mastery lessons are typically structured as follows:
- Flashback Four
- Retrieval: ‘Get Ready’
- Introducing new material: ‘Let’s Learn’
- I do, We do, You do
- ‘Do it’ task
- Modelling of reasoning and problem-solving skills
- ‘Twist it’ and ‘Deepen it’ tasks
Each maths mastery lesson begins with a ‘Flashback Four’ session, providing a daily opportunity for pupils to retrieve and consolidate learning from across the mathematics curriculum. The carefully sequenced questions revisit key concepts from recent lessons, previous weeks, earlier terms and prior year groups, helping to strengthen long-term understanding and fluency.
The ‘Get Ready’ section of the lesson revisits prior learning that will support pupils in accessing the new learning objective. Both in this section and throughout the lesson, concepts are linked to meaningful real-life contexts and represented using carefully chosen mathematical representations to deepen understanding. The careful selection and variation of representations is a key feature of our maths mastery approach: pupils are exposed to one or two key representations within a lesson, which are then varied and revisited over time to strengthen conceptual understanding.
The ‘I do, We do, You do’ approach is used to scaffold learning and gradually release responsibility to pupils. During this part of the lesson, teachers explicitly model methods and thinking processes using clear, step-by-step guidance before pupils apply their understanding more independently.
Conceptual and procedural variation is carefully planned throughout the lesson, including during the introduction of new material, teacher modelling and independent practice tasks. This supports pupils in recognising patterns, making connections and developing flexible mathematical thinking.
Independent work within maths mastery lessons is structured into three stages:
- ‘Do it’ – five to eight fluency questions designed using variation to develop procedural confidence and accuracy.
- ‘Twist it’ – reasoning tasks that require pupils to explain, justify and discuss their mathematical thinking.
- ‘Deepen it’ – problem-solving activities that encourage pupils to apply their understanding in different contexts and think mathematically.
Through this carefully structured approach, pupils are supported to develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving skills alongside a secure conceptual understanding of mathematics. Our maths mastery curriculum aims to ensure that all children become confident, resilient and successful mathematicians who can apply their learning across a range of contexts.
