Times Tables
Learning number facts and times tables is a vital part of children’s mathematical development. When children can quickly recall key facts, such as number bonds and multiplication tables, they are able to work more confidently and accurately across all areas of maths. This strong foundation helps them solve problems, develop reasoning skills and tackle more challenging concepts as they progress through school.
Times table learning is carefully planned and embedded across our family of schools through Mastering Number sessions, Maths Mastery lessons and other practice opportunities throughout the school day. This progressive approach helps children develop fluency and confidence with multiplication facts as they move through the year groups. Below, you can find an overview of how times table learning is taught and developed at each stage.
EYFS preparation for times table learning
For Reception children, the foundations for future times table learning are developed through daily Mastering Number sessions. These sessions focus on key early mathematical concepts, including recognising doubles and halves and counting in equal groups. By building strong number sense from an early age, children are well prepared for more formal multiplication and times table learning as they progress through school.
Year 1 preparation for times table learning
In Year 1, children continue to develop the skills needed for future times table learning through a strong focus on skip counting. Daily rote counting in 2s, 5s and 10s helps children recognise number patterns and build fluency, while daily Maths Mastery lessons provide opportunities to practise counting in these groups. This early understanding of multiplication patterns lays the foundation for learning and recalling times table facts in later year groups.
Times table learning in Year 2
In Year 2, children build on their understanding of multiplication through daily practice and increasingly secure recall of key times table facts. Daily rote counting in 2s, 5s and 10s, alongside weekly practice of times tables including the 3 times table, helps children develop fluency and confidence. Through daily Maths Mastery lessons, children learn to recall and use the 2, 5 and 10 times tables, count in multiples of these numbers, and make links between skip counting and multiplication facts. This helps them develop a deeper understanding of how multiplication works and prepares them for learning additional times tables in Key Stage 2.
Times table learning in Year 3
In Year 3, children expand their times table knowledge through daily practice of the 2, 3, 4, 5, 8 and 10 times tables using a variety of engaging activities and songs. Daily Maths Mastery lessons provide opportunities to explore multiplication and division facts in greater depth, with a focus on the 3, 4 and 8 times tables. Children learn to use these facts confidently when multiplying and dividing, strengthening both their fluency and their understanding of number relationships.
Times table learning in Year 4
In Year 4, times table learning is a key focus as children work towards secure recall of all multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. Daily Mastering Number sessions develop children's understanding of multiplicative relationships, while regular times table practice throughout the week reinforces fluency through a range of activities and songs. Daily Maths Mastery lessons introduce and consolidate the 6, 7, 9, 11 and 12 times tables, alongside multiplication and division using these facts. This comprehensive approach helps children develop the rapid recall and confidence needed for more advanced mathematical learning.
Times table learning in Year 5
In Year 5, the focus shifts from learning new times tables to maintaining fluency and applying multiplication facts efficiently across the wider mathematics curriculum. Daily Mastering Number sessions continue to develop children's understanding of multiplicative relationships, while retrieval practice during Early Morning Work helps to strengthen long-term recall of all times table facts up to 12 × 12. Where needed, targeted intervention is provided to ensure every child continues to develop confidence and accuracy.
Times table learning in Year 6
In Year 6, children continue to consolidate and apply their times table knowledge across all areas of mathematics. Regular retrieval practice through Early Morning Work and dedicated maths fluency sessions helps to maintain quick and accurate recall of multiplication facts up to 12 × 12. Additional intervention is provided where appropriate to ensure all pupils leave primary school with a secure understanding of times tables and the confidence to use them effectively in more complex mathematical contexts.
