Transition into Year One
At the end of the Early Years Foundation Stage, children move into Year One and begin Key Stage One — the next phase of primary education for pupils aged 5–7. This marks the transition from the EYFS framework to the National Curriculum.
From EYFS to the National Curriculum
Children’s learning continues seamlessly as they move from the EYFS areas of learning into National Curriculum subjects:

Our Approach to Transition
At The Whiteoak Academies, we understand that transition into Key Stage One is a significant step. We place a strong emphasis on ensuring that this process is smooth, supportive and carefully planned.
We believe that Year One should be Reception-ready, not the other way around. This means that children continue to learn through familiar approaches, environments and routines as they move into the next stage.
Reception and Year One staff work closely together to ensure continuity in:
- Teaching approaches
- Learning environments
- Expectations
As part of this, we have adapted the Year One environment to reflect elements of the EYFS model, ensuring children continue to experience a balance of adult-led, supported and independent learning.

Why Our Transition Matters

- Learning continues seamlessly
- Children are well-prepared for the next stage of their education
Through this approach, children move into Year One with confidence, independence and a secure foundation for future learning.
