English
‘Without language, one cannot talk to people and understand them; one cannot share their hopes and aspirations, grasp their history, appreciate their poetry, or savour their songs.’
Nelson Mandela
At The Whiteoak Academies, English is at the heart of our curriculum. We aim for all pupils to become fluent readers, confident writers and articulate speakers who can communicate effectively for a range of purposes. Our curriculum is ambitious, carefully sequenced and designed to ensure progression in phonics, reading and writing for all learners.
Early reading is prioritised through the systematic teaching of phonics using Unlocking Letters and Sounds. Pupils develop secure knowledge of grapheme–phoneme correspondences and apply this with accuracy to read and spell with increasing fluency.
As pupils move through school, they are taught to read widely and frequently, engaging with high-quality texts that build vocabulary, comprehension and knowledge of the wider world. Reading is explicitly taught and carefully modelled to ensure all pupils develop accuracy, fluency and understanding.
Writing is taught through clear modelling, explicit instruction and structured practice. Pupils progress from secure transcription skills to increasingly sophisticated sentence construction and composition. Grammar, punctuation and spelling are taught explicitly and applied within meaningful contexts, enabling pupils to write with clarity, accuracy and purpose.
Speaking and listening are deliberately developed through discussion and structured opportunities for talk, enabling pupils to refine ideas and build confidence in expressing themselves.
